New community social groups emerging in PDC areas

Walking, talking and listening!

Equality, activism, female empowerment, self –care are all subjects close to Thriving Place’s heart so we are keen to facilitate a new women’s group for the area which will be a celebration of just that.

The aim is for this fortnightly group to be a safe and welcoming space to share stories, knowledge and feelings whilst also being a place for female empowerment, activism and discovery collide.

If this sounds like a group you’d like to be a part of, or might just be intrigued to find out more, or you might want to contribute to some of the sessions and share your skills or knowledge – come along and speak with us!

This will be a community led initiative, facilitated by Thriving Places. Help us decide where & when it should be held, whether it should have a name, and what you’d like to happen at the sessions…..

ALSO STARTING SOON:

Local history, local projects and local people are also things we are passionate about in the East-End. The Thriving Places team are looking to chat with local people to embrace the local community and shape the future of the area. In spring 2019 we are looking to create an East-End Walking Tour Group to celebrate the amazing history, culture and amenities in the area.

If you would like YOUR say on shaping either of these new community social groups we would love to see you at the Barrowfield Community Centre on 14 March from 9.30 to 11.30am at our free Community Breakfast!

Look forward to seeing you again soon and hearing your opinions!

Springing into 2019!

Recent activity from the TP team in the area....

So far the Thriving Places team have had a busy start to 2019 where we have met many wonderful people in Parkhead, Dalmarnock and Camlachie! We have hosted 2 community breakfasts in the new and fantastic Parkhead Schoolhouse which is situated on Westmuir Street. At the breakfasts we shared morning rolls, tea’s and coffees with a number of local people who shared there views and opinions on there local area. The Parkhead Schoolhouse has been recently restored and is managed by Parkhead Housing Association for the community - we recommend popping in to see the venue in the near future. The Schoolhouse also hosts Baillieston Community Care, Jobs & Business Glasgow, Men’s Self, Parkhead Youth Project, Playbusters and Skills Development Scotland.

On Saturday the 16th of February we had a joint community event in Dalmarnock at the Baltic Street Adventure Playground.  We celebrated the new BBQ area at Baltic Street & chatted with local families who shared their stories and experiences of Dalmarnock. It was a really busy event with musicians, Tesco’s Community Champion leading some gardening fun, kids drawing designs for the area, loads of great home made fun courtesy of Fare Share and of course a lot of adventure park fun! Baltic Street Adventure Playground is an amazing facility and we would highly recommend anyone popping along whether it is for the kids to play or to have a tea or coffee.

The Thriving Places team were also involved in the Barrowfield mid term break plans in February. Over the school holidays alongside West of Scotland Housing Association, we shared breakfast and dinner with a number of local families. We joined families on a visit to Edinburgh Zoo with over 50 people from Camlachie. Urban Fox welcomed lots of young people of Barrowfield over the school break to their weekly drop in sessions every Wednesday evening from 5.30pm until the end of March. We will be supporting an action packed Easter with various activities and meals to be had in Parkhead, Camlachie and Dalmarnock – we will keep everyone up to date with this one in due course!

Away from the breakfasts, BBQ’s and school holiday programme we have been continuing to engage with local people in the East-End. You may have seen us chatting away at Parkhead Cross, London Road or in Dalmarnock whilst giving out some hot tasty soup on the colder days to local people. You may have also seen our leaflets in local shops and places displaying the dates of focus groups and breakfasts which are open to all! Our next community breakfasts are from 9.30am at the Barrowfield Community Centre on Thursday 14th March and at Silverdale Nursery on Friday 22nd March at 9.30am. We’d love to see you there!

Our next Focus Group will take place on Friday 15th of March at 10am at the Barrowfield Community Centre and is open to anyone who wishes to share their views on their local community.

We look forward to seeing you all soon and do not hesitate to find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!

Meet the Thriving Places PDC team!

From left to right: Sean Ewart, Meabh Bradley, Colette McLure

These are the friendly faces you will no doubt encounter at some point soon in your community if you live in Parkhead, Dalmarnock, or Camlachie!  We want to know your thoughts and opinions on your neighbourhood, and help make sure your words get heard and are a part of the Locality Planning and any future developments in the area.

When we aren't out and about in the area, facilitating community breakfasts or helping out with partner organisations and groups locally, you'll find us at our base in Barrowfield Community Centre.  We are hosted by West of Scotland Housing Association, so you might also find us at community events run for West of Scotland tenants too occasionally and wonder why we look familiar!
